Russell Kirk (1918-1994) authored The Conservative Mind (1953), which promoted Edmund Burke as an early conservative from the 1700s. He was critical of libertarians on one side, and excessive foreign interventionalism on the other.
The Heritage Foundation promoted Kirk's work, and at one point he advised George H.W. Bush to speak out against abortion-on-demand during the 1988 campaign for president.
Kirk was hostile to innovation and refused to drive cars or watch television.
